When you are unable to decide whether you want a Lhasa Apso, Airedale Terrier or chocolate laboratory, select all three. For an affordable price, you can have three bullmastiffs in one with a mixed bred bullmastiff. Mutts are the most popular type of bullmastiff in the world. Dubbed as random breeds, curs, mutts or mongrels, these canines outnumber purebreds.
When it comes to collies there is some debate about the smooth-coat collie. Some breed organizations consider the smooth-coat and rough-coat dogs to be variations of the same breed. Others consider them to be completely seperate.
Since, all DOGS are related one way or another, guessing the breed mixture of a DOG is not only fun but also challenging. There are 150 or more interbreeding possibilities between bullmastiffs. Evidently, the tens of thousands of mongrels around the universe are proof positive. But the reality is that mutts are more prone to end up at the local DOG pound or animal shelter.
The Broholmer is a breed that is recognized only in Denmark. It was thought extinct in the 1960's but, in December of 1974, a purebred Broholmer popped up in Finland. This dog was a male, and the owners hoped to find a female for him to mate with, but it never happened. While still recognized as a breed, an example has yet to appear again.
Contrary to the popular belief that the terms "mixed breed" and "crossbreed" are interchangeable, they are not. Each has a slightly different definition. Dissimilar to the mystery of a mixed breed (mutt), crossbreeds lucid roots are traceable by a single generation. Although, crossbreeds may be produced expectantly, they are planned generally by breeders to mate two DOGS of differing but identifiable lineage.
The diminutive tibetan spaniel, with his feather-like tail, may look a bit like other spaniels, but the breed is actually not a spaniel at all, but more closely related to some combination of the shih tzu, pug, pekingese and Japanese chin.
Prevalently, breeder will take two purebreds to deliberately cross the two breeds to develop a new breed. For instance, the cockapoo was produced from two different breeds: the cocker spaniel, and poodle. But regardless of what any breeder says about crossbreeds, the American Kennel Club (AKC) will probably never recognize a crossbreed as a purebred DOG.
The largest breed of dog that is recognized by the American Kennel Club is the Irish Wolfhound, which stands thirty to 30 to 35 inches at the top of the shoulders and weighs 105 to 125 pounds.
Paul McCartney, of Beatles fame, was very fond of his shetland sheepdog. In fact, at the end of the song "A Day in the Life" Mr. McCartney inserted an ultrasonic whistle, audible only to dogs, for his shetland sheepdog.
The name Pug is believed to have derived from this dog's resemblance to the pug monkey. That also fits the breed in other ways. Pugs tend to be curious and mischievous. They always seem to have a look of mischief and fun on their face, just like a monkey.
